How to Segment your Email Lists in MonkeyPod
One of the powerful benefits of having your organization's relationships, financial transactions, and fundraising tools in one system is the ability to easily segment your relationships based on their interactions with the organization. Target different segments with customized email campaigns designed to speak directly to them! In this article, we look at specific ways that you can segment your email lists to help you best reach your supporters.
Note: This article assumes you know the basics of the MonkeyPod Email Outreach system. The steps below show how to configure advanced searches to find targeted sets of supporters to add to existing mailing lists. Check out this article for details about how to create new mailing lists. How do I create email lists based on information in my MonkeyPod?
Using your MonkeyPod's advanced relationship search is the easiest way to populate an email list with a chosen segment of donors. It just takes three simple steps:
- If you need a new mailing list (as opposed to adding to an existing one), create it first.
Choose Relationships > Advanced Search from the main menu to find the segment of supporters you want.
- Click "Subscribe to Mailing List" on the Advanced Search page to add them all to a list. That's it!
Can you show me some examples?
Sure! Below are some examples of segmented lists to get you started, but remember, these are just examples—we highly encourage you to think about which segments would work best for your organization.
Creating a list of anyone who has ever donated
To create an email list of anyone who has ever donated to your organization, select the "Financial Activity" tab on the Advanced Search page and setup the "Contributions" section to find donors who have contributed "At least .01 Lifetime". This finds everyone who has ever donated anything above $.01 to your organization.
Anyone who is an active/former/never a monthly donor
Select the "Financial Activity" tab on the Advanced Search page. Under "Contributions", find the "Monthly Donors" and choose the status of monthly donor you're interested in (active, former, or never).
Note: If you are running a membership based organization, you may want to look into the Memberships App —it will let you do this and so much more!
Finding donors from a geographic region
Maybe you're having a local event and you only want to promote it to people in your immediate area? Or perhaps you have a different campaign to reach people who aren't in your local community. Use the "Geographic Proximity" options under the "Geography" tab to find the supporters you're looking for.
Combine that search with "Financial Activity" criteria to target just supporters who have donated above a certain threshold who also live in the area.
Get creative!
You can also segment donors based on any custom attributes you've set up in your MonkeyPod. Check out our article on the Advanced Search to learn more about setting up advanced searches.
What if I want to send a campaign to a segment of an existing list?
Maybe you're not trying to create a entirely new email list, but only want to segment subscribers for a specific campaign.
To get started create your email campaign using the email list you want to further segment, then under "Recipient Targeting" select "Send to list segment".
Select the role(s) you want to include. (This is required. If the role doesn't matter because you are further segmenting on something else, simply select every role.)
Optional Filters
After selecting your roles, you can choose optional filters to further segment.
Choose from your Custom Attributes (only Custom Attributes that are true/false options are available). You may also narrow your segment based on whether the recipient opened or did not open the previous campaign.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I only seeing some of my Custom Attributes when I am sending to a specific segment?
You can only see custom attributes if they are true/false types. If you would like to segment your list using other attributes, use the Advanced Search to select your segment.
